The Countess simply turned the helmet on and dropped it over Simmons' head And just to make matters worse, the New York Tactical Police Force is after me again. The door opened without her even knocking. Police Inspector Grafferty would soon be on his way. It meant she lived alone Gods, wasn't anything going to stand between the Countess Krak and this awful crime? Ah, yes, there was. She kicked the door shut behind her and right in front of Simmons took the hypnohelmet out of the square shopping bag. She turned down a carpeted hall and stopped before Apartment 21. Miss Simmons, who must have been at the UN, had not yet returned home and savagely hoping that she was, so Grafferty could catch this Manco Devil in the very act of mangling. She plugged in her microphone and then sat down in the easy chair. She arranged the pillow so it would support the helmet properly. The Countess Krak closed the bedroom door. There was a wide bed, a boudoir table and an easy chair, all decorated in frilly white organdy. Gods, I thought, how they would have screamed and run had they known they watched a murderer on the brink of bloody slaughter. And Krak's purposeful progress could not have done otherwise than give that impression. It was full of winter-dead trees and peopled with rather well-dressed but sullen kids, who watched the Countess Krak go by in total conviction that she was a truant officer in disguise and was about to blow the whistle on them all. The neighborhood in Morningside Heights was not too bad. The Countess Krak said, I am a fellow teacher, from Atalanta University, Manco, and I want to talk to you about a student of yours. The Countess Krak saw that a corridor led to a bedroom. A radio seemed to be playing in the next apartment. Krak looked around the rather large and well-furnished living room. She gave it a shove, a very impatient gesture. It kept clicking and she didn't know you were supposed to push it when it clicked. The Countess Krak regarded the foyer door. I caught him at the Civic Center and he's just now locating squad cars. He said he could smell the headlines already. In mobile app stores overridden with microtransactions, pay-to-win, and DLC, it’s refreshing to see classic titles as an available alternative. While not staggeringly profitable, moves like this are mostly for maintaining relevance in other platforms while receiving a noteworthy bit of revenue from die-hard fans. The games will be available for free, with in-app ads for revenue and an optional no-ad purchase for $2 per game. Sega recently announced Sega Forever, a service for mobile devices that will allow users to play a significant number of classic titles from various Sega platforms. Nintendo isn’t the only classic console brand embracing the mobile revolution. Soon enough, you may start seeing a noticeable overlap between interactive storytelling games on existing game distribution platforms and Netflix. While not quite the rumored Netflix gaming platform, interactive storytelling is a growing genre with lots of room for variety and sophistication. These interactive storytelling experiences are available for iOS and “most” Netflix-supported devices, and target younger viewers. Netflix is apparently entering the world of interactive media with choose your own adventure games. While Valve is said to be working on at least one new title behind closed doors, this could very well be a way to keep existing developers busy on highly profitable, and still popular, title. Without knowing too many details of the update, it’s clear that this is far more than routine maintenance. Specific items are receiving major redesigns, and attention to the meta-game is being handled by a character-by-character basis. Considering that Team Fortress 2 was released 10 years ago, this came as a bit of a surprise. This week it was announced that the widely popular Team Fortress 2 is receiving a major balance update to address player feedback. ![]() The work attracted the attention of poets and critics, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, who became her friend and mentor. In 1866, her father arranged for the poems and translations she wrote between the ages of fourteen and sixteen to be privately printed, and the following year a commercially published volume titled Poems and Translations followed. Lazarus began publishing poems in the 1860s and 1870s, including translations of German poems. As a teenager, she began translating the poems of Victor Hugo, Heinrich Heine, Alexandre Dumas, and Friedrich Schiller. Lazarus developed an affinity for verse at an early age. Her family was wealthy, and Lazarus was educated at home, acquiring a knowledge of Greek and Latin classics, as well as the modern literature of Germany, Italy, and France. Her book Songs of a Semite was the first collection of poetry to explore Jewish-American identity while struggling with the problems of modern poetics. Before Lazarus, the only Jewish poets published in the United States were humor and hymnal writers. Her illness began to take hold though and she returned to the United States in a poor state, dying in 1887 at the age of just 38.A descendant of Sephardic Jews who immigrated to the United States from Portugal around the time of the American Revolution, Emma Lazarus was born in New York City on July 22, 1849. Hoping to bolster her health, she decided to travel abroad to Italy and the rest of Europe. ![]() In 1884 she became ill with what is believed to be Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was deeply affected when her father passed away a year later. The New Colossus has perhaps some of the most famous lines in American literary history, quoted by many over the years.Īt the time, Lazarus was beginning to suffer from health problems. Indeed, it wasn’t until 1903 that it was engraved on a bronze plaque and added to the pedestal in memory of Lazarus. The poem did not achieve immediate success and was largely forgotten, playing no role when the statue was unveiled in 1886. She was reticent but eventually used the opportunity to again write about the lot of immigrants who came to the country, as they would generally sail past the statue on their way to Ellis Island. On her return to American shores, she was tasked with writing a poem that could be auctioned to raise money for the planned construction of the Statue of Liberty. With her fame growing, she wrote a number of works that explored more deeply the history of the Jewish people and she undertook trips to both England and France where she came into contact with some of the literary stalwarts of the time, including Robert Browning. It led her to write one of her most well-known works in Songs of a Semite and prompted her to help set up a movement for poor Jewish immigrants in New York. Daniel Deronda explored the growth of overt Antisemitism after the assassination of Tzar Alexander II in the Victorian era, and how so many immigrants were prompted to flood to America and begin a new life. Now in her twenties, she became more aware of her Jewish ancestry when she read a book by George Eliot. It wasn’t long before Poems and Translations was then published to a fair degree of public attention, perhaps because of her age, gaining favor with many poets of the time, including Emerson who became a friend and helped to mentor Lazarus.įurther collections followed, including Admetus and Other Poems in 1871. Barely into her teens, she began writing and translating, supported by her father who arranged to have her first work privately published. Lazarus was a pioneer of her time, one of the first poets to explore what it meant to be a Jew in America. Taking an interest in literature and poetry from early on, she also learned several languages including French and German. From a wealthy Jewish background, she was a precocious child who was largely tutored at home. ![]() Born in 1849 in New York, Emma Lazarus is perhaps best known for providing the poem adorning the plaque at the bottom of the Empire State Building, entitled The New Colossus. ![]() Full Shownotes: See Privacy Policy at and California Privacy Notice at. Also, word of the Insecticons has started to spread. One of the men says he has enough lumber and steel to build a town (on twenty wagons?) and asks if that's what he intends to do. The men can unload everything right here with no issue. Muldoon is there to greet them, coming out of a workshop with the Decepticon symbol stamped right on it. The riders are perplexed about this delivery, but they were paid in advance, so no big deal. Sometime later, twenty wagons weighed down by materials arrive in the desert. Giant alien robots and robberies, what an odd mix. Starscream hopes it's enough to begin operations and if Muldoon needs more, then more will be acquired. Muldoon is absolutely shocked by the sight of all the money. Right on cue, the Insecticons arrive back from their train heist, with plenty of cash. Starscream tells him that secrecy is paramount for his plans and that funding won't be an issue. Muldoon's worried since their location is far from a water supply or a source of materials. Elsewhere, Muldoon and Starscream (colored a dull green now) go over construction plans for a new base and factory to be built in the middle of nowhere.
